Doisy and Dam Mini Chocolate Bar Reviews

by - 14:37

While commuting, I have the terrible habit of picking up a snack at the first shop I see. I also love chocolate so when I saw these cute Doisy and Dam minibars at my train station's local Sainsburys for £1 each, I couldn't resist them. Please note, I purchased these before the travel restrictions were put in place.

The 4 flavours that I chose ranged from Coconut and Lucuma to Goji and Orange. They all looked stunning, each with a tessellating pattern on their colourful sleeves. Doisy and Dam focus on being a "healthier" chocolate bar. Here is a statement from their website which shows you why I wanted to taste it so badly!:

"We make sure every bar of D&D has a superfood, a unique taste and an irresistible texture. Our bars never have more than eight ingredients, minimum 8% superfoods and have a high cocoa content to squeeze out the room for sugar and fat"

Date and Himalayan Pink Salt:

The first bar I tried was the milk chocolate with 39% cocoa. I am pretty biased towards this bar as it is milk chocolate which I will choose over dark chocolate any day and this bar did not disappoint. I love the combo of the crunchy salt, which wasn't overpowering in the slightest, and the chewy dates that brought a wonderful texture to the bar. The milk chocolate was smooth and creamy; very moreish and in the process of writing this post, I have munched it all! It was lovely to chew on the dates but still, have an indulgent milky taste as I didn't feel that the dates themselves contributed anything more than just texture - no added sweetness or taste. This was by far my favourite bar.

Inside the delicious milk chocolate bar were yummy, chewy date pieces!
Goji and Orange:

With 74% cocoa and an orange taste, I was unsure whether I would favour this bar. I'm not a big fan of chocolate orange but thought I would give it a go. The chocolate orange balanced each other well and surprisingly, this is my favourite of the dark chocolate bars. The dark chocolate in the other bars overpowered the flavour but as orange itself is a dominating flavour, it worked perfectly. The orange was subtle and not too rich while the chocolate, although still 74% cocoa, tasted slightly sweet when compared to the zingy orange.

I also liked the addition of the goji berries. Similar to the dates in the previous bar, the goji berries added a chewy nature to the chocolate and made the experience more enjoyable. I felt that they didn't contribute much to the flavour of the bar.

One of the best dark chocolates I have tried!
Coconut and Lucuma:

Like all the dark chocolate bars, this unique flavour has 74% cocoa. It is flavoured with coconut and a superfood called lucuma, a Peruvian fruit. This has a strong coconut scent and a lovely, mild coconutty taste. The flakes of coconut give a chewy texture. I thought that the darkness of the chocolate drowned out the flavour of the coconut and I was unsure of what the lucuma contributed to the chocolate bar. Unfortunately, this chocolate bar wasn't as good as I had hoped. I thought that the chocolate was bitter as the sweetness of the fruit wasn't coming through and therefore, I didn't enjoy this bar.

Unfortunately, the coconut seemed to be drowned out by the dark chocolate
Maca, Vanilla and Cacao Nibs:

The maca, vanilla and cacao nib bar was my least favourite, despite the fact I didn't enjoy the previous one either. It was too much. The cocoa nibs and maca give off a strong kick to the already rich chocolate. The vanilla is lost completely and although it seemed to sweeten up the more you chewed, it left a rich, grainy aftertaste which was sickly. For this reason, I couldn't finish the whole bar. This would be great if you want to avoid overeating your chocolates but not so great when you want a binge night!

I wasn't a fan of this bar, definitely one for hardcore dark chocolate lovers
This wasn't the best of experiences but I think for what Doisy and Dam are striving to achieve, they are doing a great job. I am a fan of chocolate without the added superfood despite this trend being on the rise. I think it would be more enjoyable if I liked dark chocolate but unfortunately dark chocolate is the way to go when striving to be healthier.
