Tesco Finest Salted Caramel & Chocolate Hot Cross Buns

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you are all having a lovely day! One of my favourite Easter pleasures is hot cross buns so, when I spotted these Salted Caramel and Chocolate Hot Cross Buns on my latest food shop to Tesco, I had to pick them up to try!

At only £1.50 for 4, these hot cross buns are from the Tesco Finest. Described as "salted caramel & Belgian chocolate hot cross buns packed with salted caramel fudge pieces and rich dark chocolate chips", these instantly caught my eye as I have a deep love for salted caramel!

These buns looked gorgeous; they had a beautiful golden colour accompanied by the famous cross. Tearing one open, you can see it is fluffy inside and the perfect hot cross bun texture although on the first inspection, there aren't many chocolate chunks and the fudge is none existent.

Having tried it, I was quite disappointed with the bun. When I think of hot cross buns, I think of the typical raisin filled delight, however, this just didn't hit the spot. The texture was perfect; light and fluffy as you would expect and the taste was just the right sweetness. The chocolate chips were sparse and not equally distributed throughout the bun while the salted caramel fudge only presented itself twice in small quantities. The fudge didn't taste salty either so it didn't meet my expectations of salted caramel. In all honesty, it tasted like a chocolate chip brioche.

I will give it credit, it was delicious for what it was. I just wasn't expecting it to taste that way. For a brioche, it tasted amazing. The chocolate chips brought bitterness to the sweet dough and balanced it out perfectly. It would make a delicious breakfast treat but I am a little deflated as I didn't get the salted caramel hit I was expecting.

Overall, these are nice hot cross buns. If you are looking for salted caramel and chocolate hot cross buns, I would recommend you purchase the Tesco bakery version of these as they are cheaper at 65p and see if you enjoy them first. These buns don't have anything on the original hot cross buns. If you don't like chocolate chip brioche, you won't like these. The texture is great and the balance between sweetness and bitterness is just right, I just really wanted some salted caramel :(

What is your favourite wacky flavour of hot cross bun? Have you tried any salted caramel hot cross buns and can recommend them? I would love to hear your opinions in the comments!
