Meet The Business - Cookie Crumbles

by - 12:17

If you're like me, then baking is a passion of yours. In today's "Meet the Business" post, I am talking to Carola, the wonderful owner of Cookie Crumble, a home baking mix business! I love the ease that baking mixes provide, so I am very excited to do this interview!

A little bit about Cookie Crumbles

Cookie Crumbles specialises in natural baking mixes. Not only do they have mug cake mixes and baking kits, but they also do a baking subscription! Their baking mixes range from gingerbread to muffins, so there is a treat for everyone. They also have 2 vegan kits and a gluten-free one!

Hi there! Could you tell me a bit about Cookie Crumbles?

I was initially trained as a chef and pâtissier in Paris. I then moved into journalism and became a food editor for numerous magazines. While my children were little, I realised that kids were no longer encouraged to get baking and cooking. Hence Cookie Crumbles was born, initially as a cooking and baking party business and then I added the range of natural baking mixes.

Why did you decide to start a baking mix business?

My passion for food goes back to my early childhood in Germany. I would bake cakes for my teddybears using baking mixes. However, I believe that the products available to the consumer at the time in the supermarket lacked quality and taste and was full of nasty ingredients.

What makes your baking mixes special from others out there?

Cookie Crumble's mixes use only natural ingredients. We use wholemeal flour, seeds, dried fruits and natural spices, such as cinnamon or natural vanilla. Also, the products are super easy to prepare and foolproof.

What is your favourite mix out of all the range and why?

I absolutely love the Gorgeous granola energy bar mix. The product is packed with seeds, such as sunflower, linseed, sesame, pumpkin and poppy seeds and it’s so moreish. I bake in advance and cut
it into bars to take it to the gym or work.

Do you plan on extending your gluten free-range or even trying out other free-from products?

I would like to add more mixes, but it’s very hard to develop a tasty and natural free from product. Some of our mixes are by nature, without labelling a free from product. Both the Gorgeous Granola energy bar and the Fabulous Gingerbread biscuit are vegan and can be prepared with vegan-friendly ingredients!

What is your favourite part about working for Cookie Crumbles?

I love the diversity, as no day is the same. I still teach cooking once a week to special needs children and run parties at the weekend. During the week, I concentrate on the baking mix business. I still get
excited about every order I receive, however small and love to hear the positive feedback.

What challenges have you faced when running your business?

I’m always full of ideas, but at times lack execution. I believe finance is probably the biggest problem, as my business is completely self-financed. I have made some silly mistakes in the past.

Is there anything you’re working toward or wanting to achieve?

I would love to export more as I have previously dabbled in export. I have sold to Carrefour in France and Lulu’s in the middle east. I always wanted to achieve a supermarket listing, but it’s no longer top of my priority list.

If you could sum Cookie Crumbles in 5 words, what would they be?

Fun, exciting, delicious, challenging, a dream come true
