Meet The Business: Yum Yum Tree Fudge

Sunday, May 03, 2020

It is that time of the week again! Today's "Meet the Business" post is around a fudge company called Yum Yum Tree Fudge, a business relatively local to me and close to my heart. Let's begin the interview!

A little bit about the business!

Yum Yum Tree Fudge is a small fudge company owned by the lovely Lily and Adrian. Their aim is to make the UK's best quality fudge and to this date have created over 80 flavours! With over 9 years of experience under their belt, this couple has created some of the most unique flavours fudge has ever seen.

Why did you decide to start a fudge business?

I started making fudge as Christmas gifts for family and friends and of course for your loved ones. I made the fudge as delicious as I could with the most premium ingredients. They were a huge hit, so that year, Adrian, my husband, suggested I started selling them at our local post office. We sold 80 bags that Christmas. Having had success there, I decided to make a small business of it by first going to farmers markets and letting customers sample the fudge and buy them.

I still practice the life advice that I was given from my mother and how grateful I am for it. She always said that when you are giving a gift, make it the best that you can afford or create as that gives real joy. It all grew from those small stalls to the giant BBC Good Food Shows at NCE, Excel or Olympia. We also got picked up by Harrods in our 2nd year. We were selling to Harrods for a good 4 years, or so! I came up with our homemade recipe 11 years ago, and it is still the same base recipe we use. We grab the attention of our new and existing customers by adding exciting flavours.

What makes your fudge special from others out there?

I think it is our secret recipe. It uses a little less sugar (British Sugar to be exact that is grown in our area) and our premium ingredients. Plus all our flavours and colours are natural.

What is your favourite flavour out of all the range and why?

My love for my flavours is like children. I love them equally, but some do please me more than others, like our Raspberry Ripple, Sour Apple and Lemon.

What is your favourite part about working for yourself?

The best part is when we worked from home, the children grew up knowing that I was home, and dinner was on the table. Now they are a big part of the business and contribute to the company.

What challenges have you faced when setting up and running your business?

I would say keeping our range of flavours down is our biggest challenge. We can't stop ourselves from coming up with new flavours! There is a lot of work in the background to be done like food health and safety and conforming to food standards, which no one sees. I started this business during a recession. I was even in The Times' financial section for doing something a bit odd.

Is there anything you’re working toward or wanting to achieve?

One of our biggest goals has recently been achieved, which was to move into our lovely new factory. We are a small business, so we feel we are in a fortunate position to be able to bend with most challenges that we are thrown at. With the COVID 19 situation, all and I mean ALL, of our events that we sell at, had been cancelled. This constitutes 70% of our income stream, meaning we had to concentrate on promoting our online side of the business which was, in the past, a badly neglected part of our business. Now we are working hard to make our online side of the business to be more productive and reach further than we can physically from shows.

If you could sum Yum Yum Tree Fudge in 5 words, what would they be?

Gourmet, contemporary, eco, innovative & addictive
