Meet The Business ~ Grace To The Humble

Sunday, July 12, 2020

Homelessness is a surprisingly big issue in the UK. Around 300,000 people are living on the street, with many more living in tight situations at home. In this week's Meet The Business, I decided to stray away from eco-friendly brands to give you another amazing small business. Instead of looking out for the environment, Grace to the Humble lookout for the people. I thought this was a very important issue to raise awareness for, especially as many people have lost their jobs recently. Let's get to the interview!

Hi there! Could you tell me a bit about yourself and your business, Grace To The Humble?

Hey, I’m Fidelis Shonde, a sales and marketing professional, with a passion for community, culture and media. Grace to the Humble is a merger of those passions. We are a conscious fashion brand with a mission to eradicate homelessness. I have been running Grace to the Humble for around a year now. Grace to the Humble started with a desire to help the ever-growing homeless population in the UK. That is paired with my desire to see bold statements and clothing, ones that I would want to purchase. I created the brand, based on a statement of scripture (James 4:6), ‘But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble’. This created our ethos of "Look Good, Do Good, Feel Good". We donate 10% of profits towards homeless charities. We hope to enrich lives with our designs and creations.

Why did you decide to start a clothing business?

I’m keen on creative expression, especially in the medium of wearable art. I have been playing with the idea of creating unique and simple t-shirts for a few years. I’m also a regular member of an outreach programme called JOSO (Joy of serving others). It is a group that provides food, clothes and counsel to the homeless in central London. There are over 300,000 homeless in the UK, of which more than 12,500 are rough sleepers. This is something that frustrates me, so the concept of a socially conscious fashion brand that donates a percentage of its profits to fighting homelessness was born. I really wanted to help people out, because this figure is alarming.

What makes your hoodies & t-shirts special from others out there?

Our slogan is Look Good, Do Good, Feel Good. There are so many things that set our clothing apart. What sets us apart isn’t just that our clothing is ethically sourced. All of our clothing is printed in Britain, and we have some unique designs that you can't find anywhere else. The last thing that sets us apart is that every time you buy something from Grace to the Humble, you are contributing directly to relieving homelessness in the UK. Although we donate this through well-established charities, your money goes towards helping those in need.

What style or product is your favourite of all the ranges and why?

My favourite range is the GTTH range. The range is marked by the large stylised letters of G-T-T-H (The initials of the brand) in a bold font. It's so simple but makes a big statement. I really like this range, and would recommend this if you're looking for a stylish statement piece.

What is your favourite part about working for Grace To The Humble?

The best thing about working with Grace to the Humble is the extreme versatility that the brand allows in regards to fashion. As long as the core mission remains the same, there are many exciting and creative ways to express ourselves in the world of fashion. My other favourite thing would be helping out the less fortunate. It is rewarding to know that my passion is helping out others, and that is an amazing feeling.

What challenges have you faced when setting up and running your business?

The most difficult part of setting up Grace to the Humble was moving from concept to reality. It’s great having many t-shirt and hoodie ideas. It’s great getting the slogan right, and the logo and the colour schemes. But actually getting an e-commerce business off the ground, getting the right flow of online traffic, promotion, and smooth customer journey are the parts no one speaks about. Not to mention getting the right suppliers who understand your vision and can ease the supply chain. It was very hard, especially when there is lots of competition in the fashion industry. Although we have a USP, helping out the homeless, it can be hard to stand out and make people want to buy our brand. It is a lot to think about, and we're learning every day. You learn as you go.

Is there anything you’re working toward or wanting to achieve?

Our aim is to donate over £1m towards eradicating homelessness in the UK by 2023. You can help us achieve this by purchasing some of our merchandise. Our ranges start at £25, which is an affordable way to help out homelessness. You can find our full ranges here, and anything you can contribute would be amazing as you will be helping out a lot of people in need.

If you could sum Grace To The Humble in 5 words, what would they be?

Thank you to Grace to the Humble for answering these questions! I think it is crazy that there are so many people living in the UK who are homeless. It isn't something you realise until someone brings it up. The mission that GTTH aspire to achieve is really noble, and it is nice to see someone mixing passion with real change.
