Spooky Halloween Mummy Brownie Recipe!

Tuesday, October 13, 2020

Although we may not be able to trick-or-treat this year, we can still celebrate the holiday with some spooky treats. I love baking, so creating a spooky treat was exiting. I wanted to bake something that would be easy to recreate and have alternative methods for those with less time. I decided to bake some mummy brownies, the perfect treat for any Halloween party, dessert or afternoon tea! With a total making time of around 45 minutes, this is the perfect bake for this spooky season!

Pinterest is filled with so many creative baking ideas. Some recipes I found have ingredients or methods that are difficult for beginners. A lot of them were also in American measurements with ingredients that aren't available here. I wanted to create something fun with different methods in case you have less time. These brownies turned out a lot better than I thought.

I experimented with piping tips to get the perfect bandage appearance. I found that a flower petal tip worked the best for the effect that I wanted. If you're looking for a Wilton tip, I'd recommend the #103 or similar. My piping tip was from Amazon. It was an own brand set with around 50 piping tips, so I had a range to choose from.

You Will Need:

  • 100g baking butter
  • 250g caster sugar
  • 100g self-raising
  • 150g milk chocolate
  • 30g cocoa powder
  • 3 free-range eggs

For The Decoration:

  • Googly eyes
  • 100g icing sugar
  • 10g butter
  • A splash of milk
  • Salt
  • Caramel flavouring

How To Make The Brownies:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas mark 4
  2. Line a 9-inch square baking tin with foil or a silicone baking mat
  3. Melt the butter and milk chocolate together in the microwave. I'd recommend pausing it every 30 seconds to stir the mix or, it might burn. You could also do this step over a double-boiler
  4. Whist together the cracked eggs and the sugar until light and fluffy. You want the mix to be well combined before continuing
  5. Sift in the flour and begin to fold the mixture together
  6. Pour in the melted butter and chocolate and continue to fold into the mixture
  7. Sprinkle in the cocoa powder and fold until you have a fudgy brownie batter
  8. Pour the mixture into the cake tin and bake for around 30 minutes. You want the top of the brownie to be cracked slightly, and the middle should still be a little soft
  9. Let the brownie cool completely before decorating

How To Decorate Your Mummies:

Once your brownies are cool, you can decorate your mummies! Don't forget your mummies are monsters, so they don't need to look perfect. I decided to make my icing salted caramel flavoured as it's a little more autumnal than vanilla. You could make it spiced with mixed spice, but it could change the colour of your icing.

  1. Mix together your icing sugar and melted butter in a bowl. You can use an electric whisk
  2. Once your icing is stiff, add in a splash of milk. You want your icing to hold its shape, but also be fluffy
  3. Add a splash of caramel extract and a pinch of salt. You can customise the salted caramel flavouring to your own taste or flavour the icing to something else
  4. Scoop the icing into your piping bag ready to pipe
  5. Cut up your brownies into 8 pieces. The brownies should be rectangular, and I managed 8 decent sized brownies from the 9-inch tin I used
  6. Use a small blob of icing to stick down your eyes onto the brownie
  7. Pipe bandages all over the brownie, avoiding covering the eyes with icing. You bandages don't need to be neat and shouldn't all be in the same direction
  8. Once you've covered the brownie in icing, set it aside to harden slightly and then enjoy!
When I was piping my bandages, I started by creating a box around the eyes so I would avoid covering them later on. I tried a few ways of piping the bandages. I found the best looking bandages didn't have a specific pattern or direction. Go wild! You piping skills don't need to look perfect either. Try diagonal lines as well as vertical and horizontal.

Alternative Ideas:

If you don't have a lot of time to make these mummy brownies, you could purchase pre-made brownies to decorate. You can buy trays of brownies from most supermarkets for around £2. If you still want to bake, there are always offers on brownie baking mixes for you to use. I love brownie mixes as they save me time and a little bit of money.

If you want to make your brownies gluten-free, there are a few ways you can do that. Whether you use gluten-free flour in your mix or purchase a free-from baking mix, you don't need to feel left out if you've got intolerances! The icing doesn't have gluten in, so you'll only need to change the brownie mix. The googly eyes also are free-from gluten, but make sure you read the ingredients to check.

If you don't fancy mummies, there are a few other monsters you can turn your brownies into! If you cover the whole brownie in white icing, you can create a ghost. Unlike the mummies, you don't need to pipe the ghosts. You can also use runny, royal icing to make your ghosts. If you have lots of Halloween candy leftover, stuff it into your brownie! Chocolate overload brownies are fun, tasty and can help you to use up your leftover chocolate. If you top your brownies with orange buttercream, you can make your brownies look even spookier. Be creative with your brownies!

These brownies are easy, customisable, and there are so many ways to change them to your personal tastes. I loved experimenting with piping tips and flavours. Salted caramel is simple, but toffee apple or pumpkin spice could be an interesting experiment for your brownies. I am excited for Halloween, and even have a few more recipes for you to try this year! Will you be baking these Halloween brownies this year? Let me know what spooky monsters you're going to be re-creating! I'd love to see your creations, so get baking!
