Meet The Business: Aubrey Bay Candles

Sunday, April 26, 2020

Today is the start of something new! I am doing a mini-series called "Meet the Business" to gain insight into the amazing minds behind some of the UK's smaller businesses. I think it is important to support local and small businesses, especially at this time, so I have chosen a range of businesses that I think you would like to hear about!

Today I have Aubrey Bay founder Amy to talk to! I sent her over a bunch of questions so you can get to know her and her business better. Aubrey Bay Candles have only been in business for a few months so I'd love for you to get a feel for what they do!

Hi there Amy! Could you tell me a bit about yourself and your business?

Hi, Emily, I’m Amy and I’m the founder of Aubrey Bay candle company based right here in the UK. We make beautiful candles that smell gorgeous and also don’t contain hidden nasties. We are proud to be 100% cruelty-free.

Why did you decide to start a candle business?

It’s a great question! One day, I was reading an article in the newspaper about the toxins that are given off from burning candles. When I investigated this, I found that most candles in UK homes are made from paraffin wax. Paraffin candles are made from petroleum and when burned gave off harmful toxins.

At the time, I was using lots of paraffin candles that you’d find on the high-street. As a mum, I decided that I’d like to do something about this and create a candle that not only smelled divine but was also much healthier than what I was already using.

And Aubrey Bay was born!

What makes your candles special from others out there?

Our candles are special because we use clean-burning soy wax and our fragrances are perfectly balanced to provide the perfect candle experience.

It’s not an easy job to find candles that burn perfectly so I made it my mission to create something that performs amazingly. The secret is to have the perfect balance between wax, fragrance and wick (which is easier said than done).

What is your favourite scent out of all the range?

My two favourites are Lychee Peony and Coconut Lime. They are really special and sell really well with our customers. For me, when I light them on an evening, the scents remind me of special times, and I find this really relaxing after a hard day.

What is your favourite part about working for yourself/from home?

I love working on Aubrey Bay because it’s something of my own. Something I can build into something really special. Although we are at the beginning of our journey, we get amazing feedback from our customers. This gives me the motivation to keep on developing the business and keep on growing.
One of our aims for the future is to expand our range and have a line of soaps to go with the candles.

What challenges have you faced when setting up your business?

One of the greatest challenges setting up the business is actually making a candle. It sounds so easy and that’s what I thought, too. Making a candle that is made from a natural wax that burns correctly is really challenging.
We went through 100s of different combinations between waxes, wicks, scents and containers to finally arrive at something we are proud of.

Is there anything you’re working toward or wanting to achieve?

Yes, there are lots of goals we want to achieve. The most important one for us at the moment is to get our name out there.

Like many industries, the candle industry is dominated by big players like Yankee Candles or the bigger luxury brands. They have deep pockets and can put their candles in front of candle buyers online really easily.

We, therefore, are working super hard to create awareness online. It really helps when we can collaborate with lovely bloggers like yourself to create interesting content that people love reading.

If you could sum Aubrey Bay Candles in 5 words, what would they be?

Aubrey Bay candles are ‘affordable luxury for candle lovers’.

Thank you for answering the questions! Did you have anything else you would like to tell the world?

Yes! I’d like to say to your lovely readers - if you love affordable luxury candles come and check us out. Or if you see us online, we’d be forever grateful if you share our content as every little really does help. I’d like to say a big thank you to Emily. We love your blog!

I hope you enjoyed that interview and have gotten a better idea of who Aubrey Bay candles are. Don't forget to use my code if you fancy some candles! They would make a wonderful gift to a loved one in isolation. Let me know what you think about Aubrey Bay!

    1. Thank you for reading! It is crazy that candles can be so toxic, especially when they're burnt in your home! I am not too sure, it is probably expensive to do so but you can email them @ info@aubreybay.co.uk to check :)
