Meet The Business ~ Post Cake

Sunday, August 02, 2020

If you're like me, then you love cake! Cake is something that brings people together, and it is one of my favourite foods. If you love cake as much as I do, then I would love to introduce you to Post Cake! Getting cake has never been so easy, especially now you can get it posted straight through your letterbox!

The image showed a layered cake made with crepes. It's a crepe cake on a serving board with flowers, whipped cream and a fork also on the board. The board is sitting on a white wooden table

Hi there! Could you tell me a bit about Post Cake?

Hi there, my name is Pippa, and my business is Post Cake! Post cake is an edible greetings card company! We take customers photos and messages and turn them into tasty slices of vanilla or chocolate cake! There are also vegan options, and seasonal flavours are regularly available!

Why did you decide to start Post Cake?

I love baking, eating cake and personalised gifts. Post Cake felt like the perfect way to combine my passion and profession! My passion for baking began very young; thanks to a wonderful Jane Asher book my mum would use to lovingly create birthday cakes. I used to look forward to receiving beautiful cards. The time spent finding the perfect card and writing to one another, then patiently waiting for the post to arrive was something I treasured. I decided to combine the two passions and create delicious cakes for you to send, instead of cards!

What makes your cakes more special from others out there?

The greeting is edible! Firstly, the cake is super tasty. Secondly, it’s pretty environmentally friendly. Sending a cake means that high gloss cards aren’t printed and thrown away after the event. Instead, the cake is enjoyed, and the box is recycled! There aren't many other places you can buy a cake in a card, so we're different. It's also a fun way to send greetings!

Why do you think people should send cards with cake?

Why not?! I think every occasion should be acknowledged and celebrated, especially with cake! I’ve had clients sending me photos of Post Cake’s with birthday candles in and that really makes me smile. It really brings people together.

If you could choose, what would your favourite flavour of cake be?

My go-to cake flavour is a yummy slice of carrot cake, especially when I go out! I love the nutty cinnamon flavours mixed with the cream cheese frosting. It’s a real treat for me as it’s not a flavour I bake myself, yet, but I do have a weakness for it!

What is your favourite part about working for Post Cake?

My favourite part about working for myself is making people happy! I love the idea that a Post Cake delivery arrives, and the recipient might not even have heard of my business! Then they open the box and are surprised and delighted all at once. I’ve had some amazing feedback from elderly clients who have received them. They marvel at the idea of a cake being sent in the post and arriving fresh as the day it was baked! I often wonder what my late grandma would have thought of my business as she was an excellent baker.

What challenges did you face when setting up/running your business?

The hardest part was getting the right domain name. I also found it hard to find the time to bake around my full-time job and then 2-year-old boy. I used to get up at 5 in the morning to bake just one cake and have it ready to take to work with me. On my lunch break, I would race out of the office to the local post office. I would really panic if there was a queue as it would mean I might be back late from lunch. These days I love getting up early and having the kitchen to myself with a quiet cuppa and the smell of delicious sponge cake filling the room.

Is there anything that Post Cake is working towards or wanting to achieve?

One day, I would love to own my own unit and an industrial printer! At the moment I print the messages on labels which are then stuck to the relevant box. I would love to be able to have my own space in which I could bake, print and package the product more efficiently. As a small business owner, the ultimate dream is for Post Cake to replace a full-time wage. I believe that when you’re doing a good job, a business will boom! Of course, this will take time, but I am excited to grow.

If you could sum Post Cake in 5 words, what would they be?

To sum Post Cake up, I would say "Don’t send cards, send cake!"

Thank you for answering the questions! Did you have anything else you would like to tell the world?

I’m proud to have won several Twitter awards for Post Cake this year. The latest award was from Small Business Sunday after being recognised by Theo Paphitis of BBC Dragon’s Den! It was an amazing moment, and I am very proud of it. If you would like to order a cake, you can visit my website
